What Is Articulation
Articulation tells you how to play the written notes, depending on the articulation markings on the page. This gives the composer more flexibility with the music since whole notes and quarter notes are rigid time structures and articulations let you play them differently.

Where Are Articulation Marks Placed
Articulation marks are placed directly above the note head that is being altered. If more than one note need to have their articulation changed, then each note will have their own articulation marking. So, if you don’t see any articulation markings, you know to play the note for it’s full value.

Three Types of Articulation: Tenuto, Staccato, Staccatissimo
Staccato
Staccato (pronounced stuh-kah-toe) is shown as a dot above the note head. A staccato articulation means play the note short or detached, which means hold the note shorter than what it’s worth. In practice, it’d be like turning a quarter note into a eighth note or a eighth note into a sixteenth note.
The thing to keep aware of though, is to make sure that you are still waiting for the next beat to come until you play the next note. A quarter note might be staccato but you still have to wait the full one beat before playing the next note.
Tenuto
Tenuto (pronounced tuh-new-toe) is a line that looks like an underscore placed on top of the note head. A tenuto articulation tells you hold the note for its full value. If a quarter note has a tenuto over it, be sure to hold it for the full one beat, a sixteenth note with a tenuto means to hold it for the full quarter of a beat, and so on for all the notes.
You usually see tenuto markings in musical phrases that have staccato markings in them, to remind musicians that they should be playing those notes for the full value. This is because some musicians have a tendency to continue with a staccato type phrasing even when there are no markings for staccato. So, the composer specifically puts in tenuto markings to make sure the musician plays the note for the full value.
Staccatissimo
The lesser seen staccatissimo (pronounced stuh-kah-tea-see-moe) is shown as an upside down filled in triangle. A staccatissimo articulation means, essentially, to play the note as short as possible. Whereas staccato is detached and shorter than normal, staccatissimo is even shorter and even more attached.
